Poverty Playlist: “Another Saturday” by Stuart Murdoch

It’s another Saturday
I can’t see the calm for chaos
And a worldly body wilting
Under weights that can’t be lifted

This song perfectly captures my state of mind today, Saturday, the day after Christmas. Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch did this track for the delightful Dark Was the Night compilation for HIV and AIDS awareness earlier this year. I fell in love with it last winter soon after my move to Chicago, while spending a few early, mournful Saturdays in a lonely city.

It’s such a simple melody, but the hymnic words and that swell in the last stanza always infuse me with just enough courage and hopefulness. I’m trying to do just what he says in that last verse:

Look ahead with hope and cheer
Look ahead with raising spirits
